Overview
The Inti Raymi, or Festival of the Sun, was an Inca ceremony that took place on an annual basis in Cusco, the capital of Tawantin Suyo, between the end of the harvest period and the beginning of the vernal equinox of the Andes, in the second half of June. The Inti Raymi at the time of the Incas was the equivalent of what today is for us the New Year festival. This was a party at which a new year began and ended all the previous “crop year” between May and June, and also began the new agricultural cycle from July, so the period from the last week of June to early July was a period of transition from an old agricultural year to a new one; then the party was dedicated to that event. Inti Raymi (The Great Festival of the Sun), Festival of the magnificent ritual of the Sun in the esplanade of Sacsayhuaman, where you will be able to appreciate the most venerated Inca celebration.
Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO – QORICANCHA – SACSAYHUAMAN
One of the biggest celebrations within the Inca empire, which is celebrated on the 24th of June, this festival in honor of the Sun God takes place in three historical and natural spaces.
Scenarios that are normally used for the staging because of its importance and transcendence are the Qoricancha, which in ancient times was the main temple dedicated to the Sun God (Golden Palace), the Main Square of Cusco, which during the Inca Empire was also used for the ceremony that took place with great fervour and the archaeological center of Sacsayhuaman, a very important place for its beauty and its imposing construction.
So this day we will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the first stage, which is the Qoricancha. Depending on how the traffic is, we can pick you up in a private car or walk if necessary.
Afterwards, we will be taking you to Sacsayhuaman at a suitable time. Remember that we will be at more than 11,650 feet above sea level, and one kilometre from the Inca House, in the Qolqanpata Quarter, in Sacsayhuaman, where the main performance will take place.
This staging will end at approximately 04.00 p.m, so the transfer to your hotel will be in the afternoon.
