Come to Machu Picchu with your best friend
The 04-day salkantay trek to Machu Picchu is now pets friendly. You can bring your best friend with you on a great adventure to Peru.
Puppies are the only animals legally permitted entry if they accompany a person with a disability.
Emotional support dogs: Some sources indicate they can enter if they have a valid certification issued by a licensed mental health professional in Peru, in addition to up-to-date health and vaccination certificates.
Requirements and Necessary Permits
If you are traveling with an accredited assistance or emotional support dog, you must present:
Official Certificate: Document that accredits the animal’s function (guide or emotional support).
Health Documentation: Certificate of good health and up-to-date vaccination record.
Safety Equipment: The animal must wear its harness or leash at all times and be under the complete control of its owner.
Prior Coordination: It is recommended to contact the Ministry of Culture or CrossoverPeru travel agency in advance to ensure that the permits are accepted at the checkpoints. Important note: Transportation services (trains and buses to Machu Picchu) also allow the transport of these animals with prior notification at the time of booking. For conventional pets, there are pet-friendly kennels or hotels in the town of Aguas Calientes where they can stay while you visit the archaeological site.
