Rainbow Mountain

The Salkantay Trek is the premier alternative to the traditional Inca Trail, offering a more rugged and diverse wilderness experience. Named after the towering Salkantay Mountain—one of the most sacred peaks or Apus in Inca mythology—this route was historically used by messengers and pilgrims to reach Machu Picchu from the jungle side.
The journey is famous for its dramatic landscape changes. You begin by trekking through frozen glacial peaks and turquoise alpine lakes, such as the stunning Humantay Lake. As you descend, the scenery transforms into lush high-jungle environments, passing through coffee plantations and fruit orchards. This variety makes it a favorite for nature lovers and those seeking a deeper connection with the Andean environment.
For travelers, the physical challenge is significant. The highest point, the Salkantay Pass, sits at 4,630 meters (15,190 ft), which is higher than any point on the classic Inca Trail. While it does not require permits as far in advance, good physical conditioning is vital. The trek typically ends at Aguas Calientes, providing a unique “back-door” entry to Machu Picchu that feels like a true expedition.
