Overview and Highlights
The Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun is an Inca ceremony that takes place annually in Cusco. It is the capital of the Tawantinsuyu that goes between the end of the harvest period and the beginning of the spring equinox of the Andes in the second half of June. The Inti Raymi in the time of the Incas was the equivalent of what is today for us the New Year’s festival. This was a festival in which a new year began and the entire previous “harvest year” ended between the months of May to June, and the new agricultural cycle also began from July, so the period between the last week of June and the beginning of July was a period of transition from an old agricultural year to a new one, so the festival was dedicated to that event.
